Event information

In research environments — especially those with layered hierarchies and complex power dynamics — stress can become constant, and productivity can suffer. This masterclass draws from Capoeira’s unique blend of movement, rhythm, and strategic play to help researchers manage stress, navigate multi-level hierarchies, and remain effective without burning out.

Agenda:

  1. Introduction & framing
  2. Capoeira as a model for adaptability and presence
  3. Stress regulation: from body to brain
  4. Reading the “game” in hierarchical systems
  5. Strategic play: malícia in academia
  6. Closing reflections and action plan

What will you learn?

  • Practical stress-regulation techniques grounded in movement and neuroscience
  • How to read and adapt to multi-hierarchy environments using Capoeira’s principles of timing and malícia (strategic intuition)
  • Strategies for prioritizing and finishing work without losing creativity
  • Tools for maintaining presence and emotional balance under pressure

For who:

Researchers at universities, think tanks, laboratories, or multi-partner projects who want to work more effectively within complex organizational systems.

This masterclass is also suitable for:

  • Research team leaders managing cross-disciplinary collaborations
  • Postdocs and PhD candidates navigating institutional politics
  • Academic project managers working with multiple stakeholders

About Chris Maier

He is known in the Capoeira world as Vaqueiro – is a leadership coach, movement educator, and cultural translator with over 20 years of experience. His career has taken him from grassroots community building to mentoring in the Thai royal palace, giving him deep insight into leadership within both fluid and rigid hierarchical systems.

Chris integrates Afro-Brazilian movement culture, neuroscience, and positive psychology to create embodied strategies for resilience, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. In academia and research contexts, his work helps teams navigate multi-level hierarchies, reduce stress, and maintain performance under complex demands.

As founder of the ComPa55o methodology, Chris teaches leaders and researchers how to “play the game” without losing themselves — applying Capoeira’s principles of rhythm, malícia, and collective intelligence to the modern workplace. His approach combines scientific rigor with cultural wisdom, ensuring participants walk away with both practical tools and a renewed sense of purpose.
