Analogue Campaigns and Habitats: Training for the Moon and Mars

Led by Professor Bernard Foing—former Chief Scientist at the European Space Agency (ESA) and Executive Director of the ILEWG—this masterclass offers an inside look at the high-stakes world of analogue space missions. As the lead organizer of the EMMPOL (EuroMoonMars Poland) campaigns, Professor Foing shares his decades of expertise in simulating extraterrestrial life to prepare the next generation of astronauts and researchers.

This session dives into the engineering and psychological complexities of analogue habitats. Participants will explore how extreme environments on Earth—from lava tubes in Iceland to isolated research bases in Poland—serve as laboratories for testing lunar and Martian technologies.

Key themes include:

  • Habitat Design & Life Support: The architecture of closed-loop systems, including hydroponics, waste recycling, and 3D-printed infrastructure.

  • EMMPOL Mission Protocols: Insights into mission control, extravehicular activity (EVA) simulations, and the "shoebox" instrumentation used for planetary exploration.

  • The Human Element: Managing the physiological and psychological impacts of isolation, confinement, and high-stress decision-making.

Whether you are a student, researcher, or aspiring astronaut, this masterclass provides the technical and operational blueprint for building sustainable human presence beyond Earth.
